In General New Feature - Milk Money Entry Tools Rate This Entry

We're going to try to bring some more daily excitement to The Milk Carton soon starting with the introduction of a new weekly feature - Milk Money - a sort of "TMC Recommendations", where your (hopefully) favorite music webzine staff give their recommendations on what they think is worth your hard-earned (or carefully saved in this era) cash, what you should check out, and shouldn't be missing out on in your life. I'm going to do just mine this week in my blog and see if there's any response. This might be a bit on the long side for what we eventually use in the feature, but I figured I'd go ahead and try it and see if I get any feedback. So here goes!..

Two of my favorite films of 2008 drop on DVD/Bluray this week - the first being Milk, the multiple Oscar nominee and deserved winner for Best Actor (Sean Penn) and Best Original Screenplay about the iconic politician Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay man elected to public office. It's finely directed by Gus Van Sant and features a huge cast of top-notch performers including James Franco, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna, and more. The second is an unconventional Swedish vampire flick/coming-of-age drama (no, not like The Lost Boys at all) Let The Right One In, which was easily the best foreign film I saw all year with great depth as well as strong writing, acting, and direction. It centers around the budding friendship and romance between a bullied 12 year-old named Oskar and his new next door neighbor, a "give or take" 12 year old vampire named Eli. Twilight what?

Yeah Yeah Yeahs' new album It's Blitz was pushed up to digital release this week to combat the recent leak. On the record, the band reels back a bit on their heralded instrumentation and trade in for more synthesizers in what may be a love/hate relationship for old fans yet certain to gain them some new followers of this movement as well. Lead single "Zero" is destined to be on a lot of year-end lists as one of the best songs of the year. If you can manage to get on your dancing shoes and drop the I'm-too-cool-and-indie-to-dance pants, you'll be singing along and grooving to this one all summer long.

Other things I love this week:
The subtly biting opening track "Generosity" from Mirah's just-released album (a)spera. Cursive's new album, Mama I'm Swollen. The helpful personal finance tracker Mint.com. TMC finally on Twitter.
