#1 (Permalink) Lost - Spoiler Edition! - Mon, 5-24-10, 7:16 PM Old

I know we have a number of Lost fans here on the boards, but I didn't want to talk details in the regular thread, as not everyone's seen it (Perkins...), so discuss here! Did you love it? Did you hate it? Is your head still spinning?

A few things from yours truly after watching that ever-so-controversial last segment:

-Jack NOT dying alone in the last chunk brought a tear to my shriveled, hateful eyes.

-Assuming all of the people on the plane were candidates (correct me if I'm wrong), do we know for sure that everyone that has died DIDN'T die at the hands of Uncle Blackie / Smokey / The Man in Black? I can't remember any 'candidates' dying in any sense that wasn't brought on by the free will of themselves or someone else, although I can't remember how the plane with Boone fell.

-I like that Ben found redemption, although him getting out from under the unmovable tree trunk is a big plothole.

-I have a theory of why "no walt", but let's hear what everyone else thinks.

-I'm really surprised that a show that has relied so much on the battle of science versus faith came down on the side of faith....sort of. Not in a bad way, but really surprised given that so many of the raging nerd faction that is making my usual nerd-site-reading so fucking difficult tends to be atheist/agnostic.

Alright, your turn. I'm still mulling everything over.

I loved it. I teared up at multiple points related and unrelated to the main story lin, and the only big problem I had with the episode was the Ben-Under-Tree problem, and I really didn't see the point of him actually getting trapped there in the first place.

I have (at this point) absolutely no qualms about the dead ends that were left behind, even if there are tons. To me, Lost is s character show, and the best two seasons (the first two) were about the relationships forged on this island, and I think the finale was testament to the shows best days, when the questions weren't piling on top of each other with escalating sci-fi problems. Those were fun, but when the show got down to pure connection, the love and loss created by those characters were magical, and I think Cuselof gave every cast member the finale they deserved.

I called Hurley becoming the islands protector after he said last episode "just glad it's not me", that was a bit obvious to me, but i thought Hurley guarding the island and Ben serving as the perennial no. 2 was a beautiful conclusion.

Jacks death was heartbreaking, and his conversation with his father made me very sad.

I really didn't care about walt that much, so leaving him out wasn't exactly the worst thing for me. I wish faraday had played a little bit bigger role, and i think miles got the short end of the stick with basically nothing to do this season but be snarky. At least Richard got his note-perfect episode.

Locke will always make me sad, simply because i wanted to see him vindicated for his tireless faith in the island, and because faith seemed to be such a driving force behind the last 30 minutes. I thought it was sad in a bad way to just see his lifeless body on those rocks.

I think all of the plane survivors were candidates, but there were a few that fell to the smoke in the massacre at the temple, right?

I thought the first parts of this seasons on the island were totally mishandled, and as such I'll probably only end up watching richard's, desmond's and Jacob/finale eps from this season when talking about great episodes. Better than season 5, which had prolly 2 good episodes tops, and none really worthy of the pantheon of episodes in season 1&2.

A lot of the characters this season really didn't have arcs, which was sad. Sawyer, for instance. He started out highly motivated in his episode, then became basically a plot mover with a scowl. Sad

As to the last segment. I'm glad it came back to the coffin. While There was kinda a funeral for Christian in season 4, i was really happy to be back and have Jack and his dad have a very beautiful conversation together.

As to nterpretations, I'm pretty straighforward about is in think: they were all in the cathedral because they were dead, and they were together because their island time was the most important time of their lives. They may not have all actually died in the finale, but what the sideways was was a time in the future when all of them are dead. If there's a reason to rewatch season 6, its to watch the sideways unfold.

Also, here's a crazy request for some dvds. Have it be an entire Linear character arc per dvd. Example, for kates disc it would start with her as a kid stealing, then flashbacks, then to island, then dharma, then the sideways/death era. I think it would be interesting.

Whats your take on walt J?

I just finished watching the finale and it was surprisingly one of the most satisfying finales I've ever seen. I don't think the series stayed as consistent as one of my other favorite megacast character studies (Battlestar Galactica), but I do think this had the better finale. I definitely teared up probably 7 or 8 times and figured I was going to run dry by the end of it. Sun and Juliet might have been my two favorite characters, so pulling them together early on in the episode was pretty much the perfect way to get me totally on board and excited about what was to come. Likewise, the Juliet and Sawyer reunion just murdered me. You have to be totally dead inside to not feel some reaction to that. To me, like Tyler it seems, the show wasn't about the mystery of being "Lost" on the island, but about the characters themselves starting out as "Lost" in real life then finding meaning on the island. So I won't get hooked on any of the elements that might be a bit unexplained or not make sense, because it was such an emotionally powerful and thrilling character study. At the end, I did think, "where's Walt?", but ultimately, I didn't really care terribly much. I am still pondering the wreckage at the end. Was that just looking over the original flight wreckage again or is that the plane that Frank was flying out with Miles, Sawyer, Kate, and Claire? Hmmm. What are you thinking about Walt and that situation Jeremy?

The wreckage was rusted and there's footprints nearby. I think it's just meant as a quick reminder as where it all started.

Walt theory coming later, I'm off to work.

Here's a quick rundown of the BIGGEST unanswered questions, and some of them are pretty egregious... but I'm ok with most of the bad answers.

Most of those 'problems' are bullshit. They really fail to give a good reason why most are issues in the first place, and jesus christ, aaron? really? It was a psychic that told Claire he was special. Said psychic was debunked in a Mr. Eko episode. He was never "special" in a magical sense, he only existed as a reason to get Kate back to the island, and I'm fine with that.

Agreed with Jeremy. Reading through those, yeah... there's some holes. But none of them were as essential to the story as they made them seem. It's a fuckin sci-fi show. it requires a decent amount of suspension of reality.

deal with it.
