Sun Come Undone

It’s time to wake up

Have you ever been so engrossed in a dream that you want to spend and cherish every moment until reality sets in? Sun Come Undone, debut album from Baltimore-based band Thrushes, captures the soundtrack to that dream so beautifully that its destined to be on lists of albums people would love to live inside if ever created.

Anna Conner’s soulful, angelic voice backed up by founder Casey Harvey competes so well with the lush, energetic instrumentation that you’re constantly on the brink of sensory overload. That’s exactly what we would expect from any fantasy though, floating between mystery and suspense, drama and romance. The atmosphere is so thickly caked on that it takes multiple listens to cut through each layer and discover all there has been offered to the listener.

"Aidan Quinn", the opening track to Sun Come Undone, greets us with a line preparing and fulfilling what’s to come in “You love watching this unfold” yet it’s hidden within much more revealing and depressing lyrics from the writer’s perspective. Once the captivating "Heartbeats" follows up, which is sure to be a favorite and mixtape staple once the word gets out, there’s no turning back from the emotional anthemic call of “My heart is full of your love”. The lyrics outline the backdrop of the album, but the character is in the vocal delivery and musicianship.

This is a debut album of grand proportions that feels like it has been soaking up for years in seasoned musicians with half a dozen albums under their belt. It’s chock-full of confidence, charisma, and oh so lovely reverb and resounding walls of delicately crafted noise. The band also features Rachel Tracy on bass guitar and in addition, Matt Davis on drums and it must be heard to believe how hard they can rock in comparison to how sweet, quiet, and lovely the sound can be as well.

As I hopelessly hung on to the last couple minutes of Sun Come Undone, we’re reminded over and over and gradually more intensely that “This is the hardest part / You’ve got to let it go”. I do, but luckily it’s in a place, unlike dreams, we can revisit as often as we’d like but still wish there was even more to discover in the end. For fans of Stars, Asobi Seksu, and Broken Social Scene, this album by Thrushes will get you through the night and makes it worth waking up for in the morning.

Overall: A-

I love this review. For once I don't have to decode a review try to make sense of it. Rather than overflowing it with strange and impossible metaphors you describe the music eloquently. You made me want to listen to the band, not find a dictionary to figure out what the hell you meant by your description of the music.

excellent review! (and after listening to the music, it's fantastic as well)

I really hope people start to check this album out. The band is extremely talented and I can assume their live show will blow everyone away with how the music is presented on record.

I just went and listened to "Heartbeats" on their myspace. It sounds like a less amazing version of Jesus & Mary Chain's"Just Like Honey." Still very nice though. I may check this album out sometime.

Wow, this is a really well-written review and exactly my thoughts when I heard this album. I don't believe "Heartbeats" sounds like a rip-off or anything although it would be no shock if they had influences from the JAMC. Less amazing though.. they do extremely well with what they have and come on, it's the JAMC and "Just Like Honey". Does it get much better than that?
