Outside Lands Interview: Matt Nathanson

August 28th, 2008
San Franciscan Matt Nathanson felt as if he was playing in his own back yard. Golden Gate Park, the home of San Francisco’s Outside Lands, isn’t anything special for Matt. Still, be sandwiched between Ben Harper and Tom Petty was. With the rising success of his most recent album Some Mad Hope, Matt is gaining the success he finally deserves. Having put out records for the past fifteen years, he’s a living testament to the notion, “Good things come to those who wait.” Discussing covers, crowds, and rolling along with life, Matt was a true pleasure to share our...

Outside Lands Day 3 Report

August 25th, 2008
It's Always Better When We're Together

If the previous two days of Outside Lands were home runs, Sunday was certainly a grandslam. The overcast clouds of the previous two days cleared, and the music just kept getting better.

Sunday started off with blues-rocker Jackie Greene on the Lands End stage. Drawing a crowd as eclectic as his music Jackie and his backing band immediately got the crowd excited for the best day of music. I’d always known that the local San Franciscan and friend of Dead’s Phil Lesh was a powerful songwriter, but his guitar prowess impressed me most. Jackie did not...

Outside Lands Day 2 Report

August 24th, 2008
"Theres Something Good Waitin Down This Road"

Saturday started off on the right note: a morning cup from my favorite coffee house, It’s A Grind. But, assuming you don’t care all too much about my long awaited cup, I’ll fill you in on the music.

Arriving on time at the Sutro stage for Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet, I was surprised by the amount of people that had arrived for the first set of the day. Opening with “A Fuller Wine,” the quartet picked, plucked, and strummed their way through a set mixed with both resurrected American folk songs like “Banjo Pickin’ Girl”...

Wilco Shoot for Spring 2009 Release

August 19th, 2008
It's rare for an artist to hate their own work, but Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy isn't your typical artist, either. After a recent performance in Albany, NY, Tweedy shared with Albany radio station that he "kinda hate[s]" all of the previous Wilco albums.

Tweedy adds, "none of them are a statement that I would be comfortable making right now at this point in my life. They all served their purpose, and in that respect I'm proud of all of them.

"But as something that feels artistically in keeping with who I am today, I think that they are inevitably going to fall short of that as time...
